Unemployed Professionals

Career Center, Maine Department of Labor

185 Lancaster St., Portland

Tuesday, April 30 -- 8 a.m.

These days, it is not unusual for a midcareer professional in any field to find himself/herself suddenly out of a job -- and not particularly prepared to mount a successful job search in a difficult and changing marketplace.

Cindy Edwards of the Maine  Department of Labor manages the free weekly Unemployed Professionals program, at which outside speakers present useful and confidence-building information for attendees. The group also engages in networking and mutual support conversations.

In this presentation on Marketing Your Skills, Jim Milliken will lead a discussion of ideas and insights on the concept of preparing one's personal marketing program, in which the person is the product/service to be marketed. The design touches on the steps in the typical marketing program, starting with market research and internal product-service analysis, then proceeds to target marketing anaysis and sales activities.

The essential purpose is to empower the unemployed professional, who perhaps has never been in this position, or hasn't been in many years. The tools and activities described in the program give the person an easily do-able way to build and use the skills that will lead to -- not just another job -- but a successful career relaunch.
